Natura and UFSCAR Partner for the Conservation of Virola Surinamensis

In 2012, we partnered with UFSCAR (Federal University of São Carlos) to develop a conservation project for Virola surinamensis, also known as ucúuba.

This species is listed on the IUCN and MMA/Annex I Endangered Species List, primarily because it was one of the most commercially traded woods in the Amazon region during the 1970s and 1980s. Currently, the species is again in demand for its non-timber potential.

Natura recognizes the need to conserve the biological diversity that exists today; therefore, the use of ucuúba butter, derived from the seeds, in some of our brand's cosmetic products has led to the initiative to study the conservation of this plant in its natural environment.

The project aims to study the genetic diversity of ucuúba present in three areas with different management practices in order to promote the on farm conservation of the identified genetic resources and strengthen the sustainable production chain of this plant resource.

This is an important scientific partnership, and we hope that the results will be relevant in economic, social, and environmental dimensions.
