Pedro Soldati is the product innovation coordinator in Formula Development at Natura. In his presentation at IFSCC 2024, he discussed the research developed in cosmetics for women over 80 years old.
The current trend is that the population will achieve greater longevity, due to improvements in life expectancy and quality of life. In this scenario, it is estimated that the population over 80 years old will triple by 2050, and studies on skin at this age are scarce in the scientific literature. Because of this, research is necessary to support the development of new cosmetic products for this audience.
To better understand these issues, the study was based on evaluating the characteristics of 80+ skin and how it differs from younger skin, in order to develop cosmetic products aimed at this demographic based on these data.
The research was conducted on volunteer women over 80 years old, where skin parameters were analyzed through omics technologies, such as lipid composition and microbiota, and clinical characteristics such as pH, barrier function, and hydration.
Based on the results, it was possible to develop a cosmetic formulation containing active ingredients from Brazilian and Amazonian biodiversity that act on skin repair mechanisms. The use of the cosmetic product demonstrated effectiveness in promoting improvement in skin quality and reinforcement.
