Natura Researchers at IFSCC 2024: Debora Castellani

Débora is a senior scientific manager in Advanced Research and presented, at the IFSCC Congress, two studies she developed in collaboration with various areas of Natura and in partnership with rural communities from the Amazon and the Atlantic Forest.

The first one is related to the development of natural ingredients from non-timber forest products (NTFP) from the Amazon, such as oilseed plants, aiming to identify new cosmetic applications. This study allowed for understanding the potential for managing these species, mostly palms, and resulted in several innovative cosmetic ingredients. The sustainable management of NTFP generates numerous benefits that contribute to the conservation of the "standing forest."

The second research presented focuses on an aromatic ingredient developed from the flower of Pau-Brasil, an exuberant tree of Brazilian biodiversity. The scent of the flowers was captured using headspace technology in plants cultivated in agroforestry systems in Bahia. The method adopted is very important for olfactory creation and, at the same time, reduces the impact on endangered species. The fragrance was mostly reconstituted with plant ingredients, representing the floral note of Pau-Brasil. The presence of the perfumer in the field was essential for the development of this floral ingredient, unprecedented in perfumery and contributing to the appreciation and conservation of this species, a symbol of Brazil.
